Gardenia flowers are creamy white, star-shaped, and have velvety petals. They can be white or pale yellow, with a tubular corolla and 5–12 lobes (petals) that are 5 to 12 cm (2 to 5 in) in diameter. Gardenia flowers are fragrant and can change their scent throughout the day. It has a spicy scent and a green undertone. Gardenia flowers have star-shaped sepals that collapse and then fold together. They have irregular teeth or segments, and the cup is bell-shaped. The gardenia sepals (calyx) are the outermost part of the flower and are usually light green and protect the gardenia bud.
