Rose leaves are pinnate, meaning they have a central rib and leaflets off to each side. They are usually 5 to 17 centimeters long. Most modern roses have five leaves, with a few having a single leaf or three leaflets nearing bloom. Some species of wild rose leaves may have as many as nine leaves. The leaflets are often oval, sharply toothed, and have a serrated margin. They have a small stipule on the underside of the stem.
