Sweet peas, also called Lathyrus odoratus, are flowering plants that are native to the Mediterranean region, Sicily, southern Italy, and the Aegean Islands. They are flowering plants in the genus Lathyrus in the family Fabaceae (legumes).

The flowers are red wine, with standard purple petals, and winged stems that are 3.5 cm across. Wings and keels are highly variable in color in the many cultivars. The sweet pea flowers are usually strongly scented.

The leaves are pinnate, with two leaflets in mid-green foliage and a terminal tendril that twines around supporting plants and structures, helping the sweet pea to climb. It is a hardy annual climber plant that can grow up to 2 meters tall.
